In January of 2018, I joined the Inclusive Physical and Virtual Campus Committee (IPVCC) at Colorado State University. The work of this committee is to help create a campus that is inclusive both physically and virtually in it’s buildings, programs, events, and digital environments.
The IPVCC is comprised of representatives from various offices including Facilities Management, Housing and Dining Services Student Disability Center, Assistive Technology Center, Parking and Transportation Services, and other individuals who are committed to inclusion.
The IPVCC is run through the CSU Office of the Vice President for Diversity. The committee’s charge is to:
- Create and maintain inclusive design standards and guidelines using the Facilities Management process
- Review new construction and renovation projects’ compliance with these inclusivity standards
- Ensure that an annual or periodic audit is conducted of existing buildings for compliance and to identify high-priority needs
- Consider instances of hardship and requests for waivers
One of the ways this committee works to create an inclusive campus is by advocating for an increase in the number of inclusive features on campus. Some of the inclusive features this committee has advocated for include:
- Lactation rooms for nursing parents
- Reflection spaces
- All gender restrooms
- Enhanced digital accessibility for individuals with disabilities
- Enhanced physical access for individuals with disabilities
