Leadership
Throughout my life, I have been drawn to leadership roles. I have held various leadership roles in everything from my high school newspaper, to a university charged committee. Through these experiences, I have learned to be a strong and organized leader. I employ techniques from both positive and transformative leadership to effectively lead groups and organizations.
Examples of my leadership include my work with:
Electronic Accessibility
Through research and first-hand experience, I have developed a strong understanding of electronic accessibility. I am familiar with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and how to create electronic materials and website that not only is compliant with WCAG standards but are user-friendly and well designed.
A great example of my web design and accessibility work is:
Universal Design
Through in-depth research and first-hand experience, I have developed a strong understanding of the different aspects of universal design. I know how to use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to design and create courses and educational programs that are engaging and provide learner multiple ways of engagement and expression. In addition to this, I know how to use the principles of Universal Design for Access (UDA) to create physical and digital environments that are inclusive and accessible to everyone.
This knowledge base is extremely useful when working with students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and those from diverse backgrounds. By knowing how to use universal design principles I can reduce the number of barriers, and create a more accessible and inclusive environment for everyone.
Examples of my work with universal design include:
Strategic and Inclusive Communication
My undergraduate degree has helped me to develop strong communication skills. I know how to effectively and concisely communicate both verbally and in writing. I know how to design both digital and print materials that are eye-catching, while still strategically relaying information.
This skill is immensely important when working with college students. When and how you communicate with students can change how that communication is received. For example, the time of day that you send an email can greatly affect whether or not it gets read and responded to. Additionally, the language used when communicating with students has a major impact on how the information is received. It is important to think critically about how the language that is used will be interpreted.
A great example of my strategic communication work are:
Counseling and Coaching
Through specialized training, research, and first-hand experience I have developed strong counseling and coaching skills. When working with others I know how to actively listen and reflect on what is being said to me. I then offer affirmations, support, and challenges. I know how to use open-ended questions, minimal encourages, and probes to gather additional information that helps me better understand someone’s situation.
I also use these skills to effectively coach others through a situation. I use guided powerful questions and help direct others towards possible solutions for the situation they are in.
Program Development
I have a variety of skills I use when developing, designing, and facilitating programs that are designed to effectively educate others. Whether it is a multi-week workshop series for first-year students or a short training on front desk operations, I know how to effectively plan and facilitate these types of learning events.
I know how to utilize instructional design models, write clear program goals and objectives, create assessment and evaluation plans, design equal access into the program, and create promotional materials.
Examples of my program development skills include:
Assessment and Evaluation
Assessment and evaluation are not only a major concept of program development, but they are also a skill set of their own. I know how to properly assess learning and evaluate the effectiveness of a program. I know how to conduct both summative and formative evaluations on large and small scales.
In addition to assessing and evaluating specific programs, I can use these skills to assess and evaluate an organizations effectiveness. I can assess and evaluate whether or not an organization is meeting its goals and achieving its mission.
Examples of my assessment and evaluation skills include:
Risk Assessment and Crisis Management
My work with the Tell Someone program has helped me to develop strong risk assessment and crisis management skills. When working with individuals who may be experiencing a crisis I know how to effectively navigate the situation to look for risk factors, assess for immediate threats, and know what action to take. Using counseling and coaching skills I effectively work to deescalate the individual and guide them towards campus and community resources they can access for both immediate and long term support.
